Ivan Karpenko-Karyi (1845—1907) was a prominent Ukrainian playwright, whom I. Franko called "one of the fathers of modern Ukrainian theater." Karpenko-Karyi's dramatic mastery allowed him to perform with great success in all classical genres. However, he reached the highest level in comedy, which was the true creative element of the artist. The best dramas and comedies of Karpenko-Karyi — "Martyn Borulya," "Beztalanna," "Sava Chalyi," "Sto tysyach," and "Khaiyain" — have not lost their value today, and they were and remain a pride of the national theatrical culture.
