The novel "The Garden of Gethsemane," written in 1950, made the name of Ivan Bahrianyi (1906–1963), a Ukrainian writer, poet, playwright, and political figure, known worldwide. It was one of the first works to strikingly and truthfully depict the terrible nature of the Soviet regime during the years of mass repressions. Behind every page of the novel lies the pain and suffering, despair and hope of those crushed by the merciless Stalinist death machine. Bahrianyi described what he himself experienced and what could not be kept silent about. He endowed the main character of the novel in many ways with his own fate and character—steadfastness of spirit and faith in the invincibility of good. His Andriy Chumak went through all the hellish circles and endured without breaking. And this makes him worthy of the high title of a human being.
